Obituary – Milton Henderson
Graveside services for Milton Henderson, 84, former Tipton resident, will be held at Red Oak cemetery at a later date. Mr. Henderson died at a Knoxville hospital April 4; prior to that he had been in a Knoxville nursing home. His body has been cremated.
The son of John and Loma Franklin Henderson, he was born in Fairfield Township Aug. 1, 1903. He spent most of his life in Cedar County and was a projectionist at the Hardacre Theatre for many years. He also did the first microfilming of Cedar county records from 1964 to 1967.
He is survived by a sister, Edith Eden, DeWitt and a nephew, Doug Henderson., Marion. He was preceded in .death by a sister and 2 brothers.

Hummel, Mary Janice Prevo, 1916 – 2008, WWII;
Mary Janice Prevo Hummel, 91, daughter of Clyde E. and Blanch Steel Prevo, was born on December 24, 1916 in Davis County, Iowa. She attended Troy Consolidated High School, NE Missouri State Teachers College, and taught in the Troy and Pulaski Schools. In 1943 she enlisted in the Navy and served during WWII at the Armed Guard Center in New Orleans, LA. Shortly after her honorable discharge from the military, Mary moved to Tipton, Iowa where she met Richard S. Hummel, owner of the local Superior Dairy. They were married October 6, 1950 at the First United Methodist Church and made their lifelong home in Tipton. Mary taught at the Tipton Community School for over 18 years; she was a committed educator. [Excerpt from obituary]

Hummell, Richard S. ‘Dick’, 1920 – 2006, WWII;
Richard (Dick) S. Hummel, son of Elmer & Marie Hummel, was born December 11, 1920, in Davenport, Iowa. He was a Davenport West High School graduate and attended the Dairy Science Program in Ames, Iowa for two years. Dick served in the US Army, 95th Infantry. On October 6, 1950, Dick was united in marriage to Mary Janice Prevo in Tipton, Iowa. Mr. Hummel was a dairyman and owned and operated the Superior Dairy in Tipton for over four decades. He was a member of the Tipton United Methodist Church. [Excerpt from obituary].

Kern, Clarence 1913 – 1977, WW II;
Mr. Kern died at his home Dec. 19 following a heart attack.
The son of Henry William and Minerva Achey Kern, he was born at Tipton, June 8, 1913. He graduated from Tipton high school in 1933.
He was married to Vesta Crispin at the Red Oak church Nov. 2, 1940. He spent his life in the Tipton community and was employed as a school bus driver for many years. He was a member of the Methodist church and the Tipton Lions club. He was a veteran of World War II. Military services were held at the graveside.
Mr. Kern is survived by his wife, 2 sons, Craig Wilson, Salina, Kans., and Bruce Henry, Cedar Rapids; a daughter, Gerri Ann Scherer, Tipton; 4 brothers, John J., Lodi, Calif.; William H., Hewitt, Minn.; Carl F., Stanwood and Glen E., Mechanicsville and a sister, Mrs. Agnes. Obituary – TIPTON, Iowa — Mearl “Barney” Laing, 82, of Tipton, Iowa, died Tuesday, Sept. 21, 2004, at Cedar Manor Nursing Home from complications after a stroke.
He was born Feb. 22, 1922, in Tipton, to James Sr. and Lilly (Marker) Laing. He married Virginia Lenore Cole on March 17, 1948, in Lisbon, Iowa.
Barney was a retired farmer and rest area attendant on I-80. He was a member Tipton Calvary Foursquare Church, lifetime member of the VFW, and member of the National Rifle Association.
He served in the Battle of the Bulge and was taken prisoner of war.
Survivors include his wife, Virginia Lenore; daughters, Bonnie Sue (Ron) Stutzel, of Tipton, and Linda Lou (Richard) Brennan, of Tipton; son, Jeffery Mearl (Tari) Laing; 11 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by parents, James and Lily Laing, sisters, Daisy Waterman and Mary Schroeder, and brothers, Bill, Andy, Jim, Earl, Harold, George and John. [Obituary excerpt]

TIPTON, Iowa — Robert E. Leaf, 80, of 508 East 5th St., died Wednesday, June 5, 2002, from complications of cancer at the Veterans Administration Medical Center, Iowa City
Mr. Leaf hauled rock and lime and had farmed.
He was born May 3, 1922, in Cedar County. He married Darlene Rife Jun 6, 1949 in Rock Island.
He served in the Army from 1944 to 1948.
A memorial fund has been established.

Last rites for Alex R. Murray, 86, were held at the Sheets & Son Funeral Home Nov. 30 with the Rev. Dale Marshall officiating. Burial was in the Red Oak Cemetery. Pallbearers were Don Armstrong Jr., Lawrence Brown, Jim Lyle, Walt Fankhauser, Verlon Weaver and Jim Shontz.
Mr. Murray died at Crestview Care Center, West Branch, following an extended illness.
The son of William B. and Clara Pate Murray, he was born near Mechanicsville Oct 27, 1891 and was educated in the rural schools of Red Oak Twp.
He was married to Wilda McCammant in 1921 and to Mary L. Glick at Camanche Dec 17, 1966. A lifelong resident of the Tipton area, he was a road maintenance man and veteran of World War I. He was a 50 year member and past Commander of the Tipton American Legion Post. He was also a member of the Tipton VFW and the World War I barracks. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church.
He is survived by his wife, Mary, a sister, Mrs. Clara Smith, Phoenix, AZ, 2 sons, William, Davenport, and Roger, Waterloo, a stepdaughter, Mrs. David (Nancy) DeGroot, Cedar Rapids; 4 stepsons, Jerry & Lonnie Glick, Anamosa, Larry Glick, Whittier, and Jim Glick, Gulfport, Miss., 9 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.

Funeral service will be held at 2:00 Sunday afternoon for William Paterson, long time resident of Tipton community,  whose death occurred about noon today, The service will be at the Wilson Funeral Home; the Rev. H. M. Poston, pastor of the First Presbyterian  Church officiating. The Loyal Order of Moose, Tipton Fireman, and the American Legion Post members will be honorary bodes. Mr. Patterson was a World War veteran member of the Gary Whalem Legion Post; also the Moose lodge and Tipton volunteer firemen. He had been ill many months and had recently had been a patient at the Veterans hospital in Des Moines and the Hines Hospital in Chicago. Returning home a few weeks ago he bad been confined to his home a great deal of the time because of waning strength. He had a1arge circle of friends in the community which had long been his home.

Obituary – Benjamin Penningroth. TIPTON, Iowa — Services for Benjamin Penningroth, 87, of Tipton will be 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at First United Church of Christ, Tipton. Burial will be in Red Oak Cemetery. Visitation is at 1:30 to 9 p.m. today at Sheets & Sons Funeral Home and 9 am. to service time Wednesday at the church.
Mr. Penningroth died Sunday at Cedar Manor Nursing Home. He was a retired farmer.
Mr. Penningroth married Jessie Safley in 1928 in Nashua. She preceded him in death.
He was a veteran of World War I; a 63 year member of the Garey Whalen Post 123, Tipton American Legion; past president of Cedar County Farm Bureau; former member of Tipton and Cedar County school boards; and past director of Union Trust and Savings Bank, Stanwood.
Survivors include daughters,  Darlene Demaree, Lincoln, IL, Mrs. Ellis (Marjorie) Stonerook, Clarence,  and Mrs. Arnold (Carolyn) Schaper, Crystal Lake, IL; sons, Darrel, Clarence and Raymond, Tipton; 16 grandchildren; a great-grandson; a sister,  Martha Eilers; and a brother, Edward, both of Tipton.

Iowa Volunteer Infantry Company K.; was in battles of Shiloh, Corinth, siege of Vicksburg, Atlanta and taken to Andersonville and Florence, and was released after seven months, and being nearly starved; he has held office of Justice of the Peace, and is Town Trustee.  Married Miss Ellen Hart, from Michigan, December, 1865; they have five children–Edgar, Ruth, Rosa, Emeline and Sidney; lost one son–Chester. Obituary – LeRoy Shaull; Funeral services for LeRoy Shaull, 72, Davenport, will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 8, 1991 at the Weerts Funeral Home in Davenport, with the Rev. Karl Roberts officiating. Burial will be in the Red Oak cemetery. Mr. Shaull died Aug. 6 at the Iowa Masonic Home in Bettendorf.
The son of Alva and Mae Keil Shaull, he was born Sept. 27, 1918 in Ladora. He graduated from Iowa State University in Ames. He married Marie Eilers Nov. 10, 1944 at the Red Oak church.
Mr. Shaull farmed in the Tipton area from 1949 to 1955 and prior to that he worked for Union Electric Co. in St. Louis. He retired in 1978 from Iowa-Illinois Gas and Electric Co., where he was an electrical engineer.
He served in the U.S. Navy in World War II and he was a member of the ISU Alumni Association, a. life member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers and the Davenport Evening Lions Club. His hobbies included square dancing and farming.
He is survived by his wife; a daughter, Linda (Mrs. Dennis) Dykstra, Moscow, a son, Randall, Stanwood; 5 grandchildren and a sister, Lorna Hawkins, Belle Plain. He was preceded in death by his parents and 2 brothers.

William’s first wife, Elizabeth, died at age 27y9m9days, on 14 Mar 1863. Their daughter Louise J. died 8 days earlier on 9 Mar 1863. She was 5 months and 19 days of age. In about 1865 he married Emma Jane Sisler, daughter of Samuel Sisler & Catherine Litzel. On the 1900 census she is stated as being the mother of 6 children, 3 living. The deceased were: Agnes, 1879, William H., 1869, and Emma J., 1875

Obituary – Herbert Spangler – Funeral services for Herbert E. Spangler, 67, Clarence, were held Tuesday, April 15, 2003 at Chapman Funeral Home in Clarence, with the Rev. Ronald Lashmit officiating. Pallbearers were Steve Brokel, Bob Brokel, Earl Edwards, Brian Edwards, Kevin Wendt and Mike Spangler. Honorary pallbearers were Larry Edwards, Larry Phillippe, Don Simmons, Don Prey and Gary Qualls. Burial was in the Red Oak cemetery, rural Tipton.
Mr. Spangler died April 10 at the Clarence Nursing Home following a long illness.
The son of Cyril and Gladys Wilson Spangler, he was born May 17, 1935 in Williamsburg. He graduated from Lisbon high school. He married Mavis Edwards on July 27, 1962 in Cedar Rapids.
Mr. Spangler was a carpenter and a millwright for union local No. 2158 in Bettendorf, of which he was a member. He was also a member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America.
He had previously worked for International Harvester in Rock Island, Ill. and had been a member of the UAW Local No. 1309 of Rock Island.
Mr. Spangler was a member of the Moose Lodge in Tipton.
He enjoyed golfing, fishing, hunting and especially his garage.
Mr. Spangler is survived by his wife, son, Michael and wife Deb, Clarence; daughter, Cindy and husband Kevin Clark, Blue Grass, 2 sisters, Pat Sommerville, Mt. Vernon; and Carol Brokel, Mt. Vernon; 7 grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

Spear, LeRoy L., 1894 – 1918.
Leroy “Roy” Spear, son of Stewart and Charlotte Elliott Spear, was born February 26, 1894, in rural Clarence. He had four sisters and three brothers. His father was disabled, and the boys did much of the farming. He taught school in Clarence. The Spear farm was located in Fairfield Township. At the call of duty for WWI he entered military service February 26, 1918, and was assigned to Camp Dodge. (Des Moines). In March he was transferred to Camp Grant, Rockford, IL; and was assigned -to the 32 d Engineers’ Corp, Co. A. He contracted measles followed by a series of complications. Roy was 24 years, 2 months, and 21 days of age at the time of his death. [Soldiers Monument Assn. of Cedar Co.]

Tate, W. Deane, 1922 – 1999, WW II,

Obituary – William Deane Tate. Funeral services for William Deane Tate, 77, Tipton, were held Sept. 9, 1999 at the Tipton United Methodist church, with the Rev. DeLane Wright officiating. Sylvia Gould was the organist and pallbearers were Jerald Nebergall, Jerry Gallagher, Bob Holets, Alvin, Wright, Harlan Hanks and Ron Salmonson. Burial was in the Red Oak cemetery, rural Tipton.
Mr. Tate died Sept. 7 at St. Luke’s hospital in Cedar Rapids, following a long illness.
The son of William LeRoy and Clara Anna Ellerbeck Tate, he was born Aug. 12, 1922 in Logan. He ‘graduated from Modale high school in 1939. He married Patricia Jane Canfield on, May 18, 1947 in Sheldahl.
He graduated from business school in Omaha, Neb. and began service with the Army Signal Corps in September 1943. He served in New Quinea and the Philippines, and was discharged in1941.
Mr. Tate was a territory manager for Oliver Farm Equipment and White Farm Equipment. He retired in 1980.
He was active in the United: Methodist church. From 1977 to 1980 he served as Conference President on behalf of the United Methodist Men. As part of the Self Help group, he flew to Tanzania to deliver farm equipment to native farmers. He was also a member of the Tipton Masonic Lodge.
Mr. Tate is survived by his wife; 2 daughters, Marsha Tate, Muscatine; and Judy and husband. Steve McVay, Urbandale; a son, Bill and wife Marcy Tate, Tipton; 3 sisters, Verde Wolfe, Davenport; Thelma and husband Calvin Johnsen, Logan; and Helen and husband David Glidden, Chester, Calif.; and 4 grandchildren, Jenny and Bill Tate; and Nicholas and Justin McVay.

Tenley, Clarence Earl, 1895 – 1957, US NAVY WWI;
Clarence was born the son of Lawson Johnathon Tenley and Elsie May Hoover. Clarence served in the U.S. Navy during World War 1. He married Dora Tucker on February 16, 1921 in Iowa and had two children: Russell Tenley and Ruth Eloise Ruchotzke. He was a farmer all of his life near Morley, IA. Died of a heart attack on October 6, 1957 (The same day the Russians launched Sputnik). His funeral was held at the United Brethren Church in Morley, IA with burial at Red Oak Cemetery near Tipton, IA. [Kirk Ruchotzke]

Waterman, Lee, 1911 – 1944, F 1/c LOST AT SEA; WW II;

Killed in Pacific – Lee Waterman Is Killed in Action
Mrs. Daisy Waterman of Tipton received a message from the war department Friday morning stating that her husband, Lee Waterman, fireman first class, U.S. navy, had been killed in action while in the service of his country.
The message also stated that no particulars, such as date and ship, could be released because of the possibility of giving aid to the enemy.
Lived North of Tipton – Waterman was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Waterman, of Waverly, and had worked in this community a number of years, farming north of Tipton before entering the service. He took his physical examination at Camp Dodge Sept. 14, 1943, and was inducted into the navy shortly afterwards. He received his training at Faragut, Idaho, and was then sent to Shoemaker, Calif., for a time. He was on duty in the Pacific at the time of his death.
His wife is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Laing of Tipton. Memorial Service For Lee Waterman, Sunday, 2:30 P. M.
The memorial service for Lee Waterman, F 1/C, USNR, will be held in the First Presbyterian church, Tipton, Iowa Sunday afternoon, Dec. 31, 1944 at 2:30 p. m. Mr. LaVern Justin, pastor of Red Oak Presbyterian church, Rev. Stanley Sehlick, and the Garey Whalen Post American Legion and Auxiliary will be in charge of the service.
Lee Waterman was born at Tripoli, Iowa, April 26, 1911. While living near Tipton he united with the Red Oak Presbyterian church, April 9, 1939. He was united in marriage to Daisy Laing, June 6, — in Johnson County. A daughter was born to this marriage but passed away in infancy. He entered the service of his country in the Naval Reserve, September 28, 1943. He was killed by an explosion aboard his ship, USS Birmingham, while fighting a fire on an aircraft carrier at sea. He is survived by his wife, Daisy Waterman; his parents; Roy and Jeanette Waterman of Waverly, Iowa; one sister, Alice Gram of Ackley, Iowa; and :four brothers, Earl of Chicago, Ill., Jean of Delaven, Wis., Ralph of Waterloo and Alfred of Waterloo, Iowa.
His burial was at sea October 25, 1944.

Forrest Woode – Final rites for Forrest D. Woode, 77, were held at Chapman’s Funeral Home, Clarence, Jan. 31, 1992, with the Rev. Glenn W. Wernecke officiating. Burial was in Red Oak cemetery with military rites by Victory Post 286, American Legion, Clarence. Pallbearers were Allen Hamdorf, Jon and Jim Willert, Todd Sawyer, Bob Garien and Bob Ericksen.
Mr. Woode died at St. Luke’s hospital, Cedar Rapids, Jan. 28, 1992.
The son of Ernest and Ellen Olson Woode, he was born in Cedar county Sept 3, 1914. He married Esther Goldsmith at Davenport Jan. 30, 1935. He was a resident of Clarence most of his life, working for Bixler Brothers Trucking for 21 years and was a policeman in Clarence for 12 years. He served in the navy during World War 11 and was discharged as a seaman 2nd class Nov. 3, 1945.
He was a member of the American Legion at Clarence.
Mr. Woode is survived by his wife, a son. Robert, Davenport; 2 daughters, Bonnie Hamdorf, Massillon and Sandra Willert, Tiptop; 10 grandchildren,  9 great-grandchildren; 4 brothers, Harold,  Iowa City and Wllbur, Mearl and Stan; Tiptop; and a sister, Darlene Worrell, West Branch. He was preceded in death by a brother and 2 sisters.

Mearl Woode – Funeral services for Mearl Rex Woode, 69, will be held at the Fry Funeral Home at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 12, 1992 with the Rev. Jerry Wolcott officiating.  Burial’s in Red Oak cemetery with military rites. Pallbearers will be Robert and Don Woode, Allen Paustian, Kevin Kinney, Randy Mathias and Larry Kessler. Nancy Hipple is organist.
Mr. Woode died at the Veterans Administration Medical. Center, Iowa City, March 9.
The son of Ernest and Ellen Elizabeth Olson Woode, he was born at Tipton Nov. 15, 1922. He graduated from Tipton high school in 1940. He enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard in December, 1942 and served as a gunner’s mate until October, 1945. This included service on the USS Glendale.
He married Marvel Louise Rickard in Kahoka. Mo. Dec. 6, 1950. She died Dec. 28, 1987.
He owned Woode’s Body Shop from 1952 to 1966 and was engaged in body shop work for 26 years.
He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans and a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He is survived by a daughter, Pam (Mrs. Dean) Wilkerson, rural West Branch, 3 sons, Kenneth, DeForest. Wis., Marvin, Cedar Rapids and Roger, Lake Mary, Fla.; a sister, Darlene Worrell, West Branch and 2 brothers, E. Harold, Iowa City and  Wilbur, Tipton. He was preceded in death by his wife and a brother, Forrest.

MECHANICSVILLE, Iowa – Graveside services for Charles “Harold” Yule, 80, formerly of Mechanicsville, will be 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Red Oak Cemetery, rural Tipton.  Sheets and Son Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Yule died Saturday at the home of his sister in Sun City, Ariz.
He was born in Mechanicsville. He was a former teacher and farmer in South Dakota and Minnesota. He was a veteran of World War I. Survivors include sisters, Mrs. Gertrude Huber, Miss Marian Yule and Mrs. Vada Klith, all of Sun City, and brothers, Robert, Mesa, AZ  and Wallace, Black Hawk, S.D.

Funeral services for Robert B. Yule, 89, Fullerton, CA, were held July 11, 1987 at Red Oak cemetery, with Dr. Jerrold Swinton officiating. Mr. Yule died July 7 In Fullerton, Calif. following a brief illness.
The son of Charles and Nevada Little Yule, he was born June 10, 1898 near Tipton. He attended the Brookings, S.D. schools and graduated from the University of South Dakota in 1924. He married Hazel Thomson June 25, 1925 in Brookings, S.D.
Mr. Yule was a construction engineer and a member of the Sons of the American Revolution, American Society of Civil
Engineers, National Society of Professional Engineers, American Legion, Mesa, Ariz. post and a past member of S.P.E.B.S.Q. S.A. He was also a member of the Presbyterian Church and a veteran of World War I, serving as a Battalion Sgt. Major in the Army.
He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Norman (Roberta) Owen, Hong Kong: 2 sons. Roger, Fullerton, CA and James,  Kansas City, MO; 2 sisters, Mrs. Gertrude Huber and Mrs. Vada Klith, both of Sun City, Ariz.; a brother, Wallace, Sun City, Ariz. and a daughter-in-law, Ann Yule, Costa Mesa, :CA. He was preceded in death by his wife, sister and 2 brothers.
